Spend the night as your guest.

This will allow you to note and fix any issues you come across. Is the room temperature okay? Always make sure there are enough blankets and that the pillows are comfortable. Another thing to note is the morning light! Do your curtains sufficiently block the sun?

Did you see my guest room makeover today? I shared some quick and easy ideas for making guests feel welcome, like providing the Wifi password in a frame and putting together a basket of travel-size toiletries in case they forgot something! by...

The Essentials

Make sure to have key emergency items readily available. You don’t want to make your guests feel embarrassed having to ask for certain items! This should include extra toilet paper, feminine products, air freshener or matches, and a plunger.

Other items to have ready in the room or nearby should include:

  • wi-fi password
  • water carafe and glass
  • remote control instructions
  • waste basket
  • spare key and/or garage code
  • easily accessible outlets
  • fresh towels
  • clear space in your closet with plenty of hangers
  • extra toothbrush
  • lint roller
  • contact solution
  • assorted medicine
  • hair dryer
  • iron and ironing board
  • luggage rack

via Snapdragon Studio

Go Above and Beyond

  • Find out what your guests like to eat/drink for breakfast and snacks and have those items on hand.
  • Get the coffee ready ahead of time so all they have to do is hit the power button!
  • Leave a stack of magazines or a favorite book for your guests to peruse.
  • Compose a list of favorite activities, shops and restaurants for your guests to check out!
  • Place a vase of fresh flowers on the bedside table.

These little touches can go a long way in making your guests feel welcome! I hope you find them helpful and please share in the comments if you have any additional suggestions!

Looking for some new recipes to elevate your Thanksgiving Day menu this year? I’ve got you covered! Here are some recipes that are sure to leave your guests craving more and begging you to share the recipes.

Caramel Churro Chex Mix

It’s always a good idea to have a few snacks on hand. You may want to make an extra batch of this one because it looks too good to resist!

Arugula, Pear & Goat Cheese Salad with Pomegranate Vinaigrette

My sister-in-law made this last Thanksgiving and everyone loved it.  It’s the perfect mixture of flavors and also a great way to balance out the heavier dishes.

Roasted Green Beans with Balsamic Browned Butter

If you only choose one recipe from this whole post to try, you HAVE to make this one!  This is another recipe my sister-in-law made last Thanksgiving and it was so delicious. Browned butter makes everything taste so yummy.

Easy Paleo Gravy

easy-paleo-gravy

This simple recipe substitutes cauliflower for flour.  This secret ingredient makes for a thick and creamy gravy.

Step up your flavor game with these easy butter recipes; one sweet and one savory.

Whipped Cinnamon Pumpkin Honey Butter

Spread this on your rolls and use the leftovers to spread on your bagels and toast the next morning!

Homemade Herb Butter

Try adding a little of this to your mashed potatoes, turkey and pretty much anything else on your plate.

Garlic Butter Smashed Sweet Potatoes with Parmesan

Thyme-Scented Squash Gratin

Choose squash over potatoes for your gratin this year.

Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings

This seems like a fool-proof recipe that even a non-baker (me) could pull off. What’s better than a variation of apple pie à la mode?

Sparkling Clementine Thyme Cocktail

I love having a special cocktail for guests at my holiday parties. This is almost too pretty to drink! It looks so refreshing and festive.

Good luck with your planning and hopefully you’ve been inspired!

What is your Thanksgiving Decorating Style?

You would think as an interior designer my house would be perfectly decorated for fall and the Thanksgiving holiday.  I LOVE fall but I struggle to fully embrace the season until the weather and my surroundings start to reflect the transition. Thankfully fall weather has finally arrived in Saint Louis and my motivation kicked in! That is until I pulled out my fall decor and was totally underwhelmed with what was in front of me. After an hour of trying to make it work I decided it was time to reinvent my holiday decorating style. Sounds easy, right? What I thought would be a quick glance at Pinterest turned into 3 hours of my life that I will never get back! I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed but also super inspired by the different takes on the traditional Thanksgiving decor. Here are a few of my favorites…..

Labor Day in the Lou!

The Labor Day holiday typically signifies the ending of summer.  Kids are back to school, neighborhood pools are closing, the long days of sunlight will become shorter and we will soon get a break from the St. Louis heat.  Here is a list of events around the St. Louis area to help you end your summer with a bang!

Big Muddy Blues Festival

This iconic St. Louis event is in its 21st year!  Taking place on Laclede’s Landing, there will be 45 musicians/bands playing on 3 outside stages and 3 indoor clubs over the course of the weekend.  The local restaurants will be serving drinks and food.  The event starts at 3:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday.  Admission is $10.

Japanese Festival at MOBOT

The Missouri Botanical Gardens is celebrating the 40th annual Japanese Festival this year.  This 3-day cultural event features traditional music and dancing, martial arts, cooking demonstrations, guided tours of the Japanese Gardens, and so much more.  Check out their website for a full schedule of events.  Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children/garden members.

Greek Festival

St. Louis Greek Festival is in its 99th year – wow!  The celebration starts Friday, September 2nd at 11:00 AM and goes throughout the weekend until Monday, September 5th at 8:00 PM.  As one would expect, food is a huge part of this festival and an array of Greek favorites will be available.  In addition to the delicious food and drink, you can enjoy live entertainment, jewelry, art, and tours of the beautiful St. Nicholas Church.  Admission is free!

Midwest Wing Fest

Midwest Wingfest has become an annual showdown for local restaurants and organizations to compete for the title of “Best Wings in Town!”  This 2-day celebration is held in the parking lot of the St. Clair Square Mall in Fairview Heights, IL with proceeds going to Climb for PTSD.  This year national recording artist, Jon Pardi, will take the stage, as well as 3 other performers.  Other events include a 5k and wing-eating contest!  Admission is free but donations are welcome.

St. Louis Antique Festival

If you are into fine antiques and collectibles and enjoy “the hunt” you can’t miss this festival!  The event takes place at the Belle Clair Fairgrounds in Belleville, IL on Saturday (10:00 AM – 5:00 PM) and Sunday (10:00 AM – 4 PM).  Peruse over 30,000 square feet of unique pieces from over 90 vendors.  Admission is $6 and is good for both days.

Also, mark your calendars for Songs 4 Soldiers on Saturday, September 10th.  Full post coming next week about this great cause!

Americana

Americana style is all about tailored linens, historical elements, traditional furnishings with a rustic quality,  and of course,  red, white, and blue!  It’s a casual and comfortable style that can be incorporated in many different ways.  We prefer a classic approach with natural wood furnishings and lots of textured accent pieces.  Here are some items we are loving that give a nod to this patriotic-style:

St. Louis is a great city to spend the Independence Day holiday!  Below we listed some local festivities going on during the holiday weekend.

36th Annual Fair St. Louis

Held on Art Hill in Forest Park, the free 3-day event will feature incredible fireworks displays over the Grand Basin, family-friendly activities, tasty eats, and performances by big-name artists including Sammy Hagar, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic and Flo Rida.

St. Charles RiverFest

Starting on Friday, July 1st and continuing through the 4th, this event is held in Frontier Park on the banks of the Missouri River.  The most popular part of the festivities is the parade held on Monday, July 4th at 10 AM which runs along Main Street.  The event also has fun carnival rides for children, fireworks displays on the 3rd and 4th, and music by local artists, including the popular, The Funky Butt Brass Band.

Chesterfield July 4th Celebration

Located at the Chesterfield Mall, this event has become one of the largest fireworks displays in the metro area.  Guests are encouraged to bring lawn-chairs for comfortable viewing of the show.  The Kid’s Zone (open 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM) will feature carnival games, inflatable bounce houses, slides and an obstacle course.

JB Blast

This event is held at the historic Jefferson Barracks Park in St. Louis County on Friday, July 1st at 7:00 PM.  Guests can enjoy a free concert by the Starlifters USAF Band of Mid-America in the Veteran’s Memorial Amphitheater, then view the fireworks display beginning at dusk (approximately 9:15 PM).  Guests are also welcome to pay their respect to our service men and women buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Webster Groves Community Days

The family-friendly festival is a four-day celebration known for its parade, BBQ, carnival and fireworks displays.  $25 wrist bands are available for unlimited rides.  Fireworks displays will be held on the final two nights.
