project description

This kitchen renovation project combined an outdated breakfast room and kitchen space to become a new expanded kitchen for a family that loves to cook and spend time together in the kitchen.

The rooms were completely gutted down to bare studs and rebuilt. The rear wall was demolished to make way for a new counter to ceiling window that looks out to the rear yard and pool visually expanding the space inside.

The owners wanted a space that was very contemporary. They insisted that the cabinets have clean lines and smooth surfaces. They also wanted something done to the ceiling to visually combine the new large space which included a large skylight that flooded the interior with natural daylight.

The answer was to create free form soffits that soften the harsh angles created by the cabinetry. In doing so we punched backlit light coves of different sizes to add more movement to the design. Next we suspended oval accent soffits over the islands. This blurs the deep skylight well but still allows light to flood the space.

Cabinets were all custom built so that they all appear uniform. Drawer units are behind the hinged doors. Stainless steel accents and toe kicks continue the theme and match nicely with the appliances. The walls are painted with a multiple layer paint scheme and glass beads are added while the paint is still wet. These beads make the walls and ceiling glisten when the sun shines in.
